Approximately 1 mile wide, 3 miles long, and 270 feet tall, the Panamint Sand Dunes are a 5 mile walk from the nearest road. This photo was taken from Highway 190, about 10 miles away. To better put the dune size in perspective the elevation of the surrounding mountains are between 4,000 to 6,500 feet.
The Panamint Sand Dunes rest on the gentle slopes of Panamint Valley's northern cul de sac. Ringed by the rugged and heavily textured Panamint, Cottonwood and Nelson mountain ranges, these extraordinary dunes embody the stark contrast and beauty that is Death Valley.
